What is the Turkish legal system like?

Turkey's legal system has a mixed structure. It is basically based on written legal rules such as the Civil Code prepared by the Romans and the Code of Obligations taken from Switzerland. Turkey has also been influenced by the French and Swiss legal systems with legal transfers and reforms. The judicial system in Turkey has four different judicial levels that must function independently and impartially. These are the courts, regional courts of justice, the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court. Courts serve in four different areas: criminal, civil, administrative and military courts. Criminal courts are courts where people who commit crimes are tried and punished. Civil courts are courts where legal disputes between individuals are resolved. Administrative courts handle disputes related to administrative actions, while military courts handle accusations and disputes that arise between military personnel. The legal system in Turkey is based on the principle of the rule of law. While the Constitution regulates the powers of the legislative body, the implementation and interpretation of laws is the duty of the judicial body. In this way, it is aimed that the law operates in accordance with the principles of equality, justice and impartiality. However, in recent years, there have been various discussions and criticisms on the legal system in Turkey. Concerns are particularly expressed regarding the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. Apart from this, problems such as effective implementation of the law, long judicial processes and inadequate legal education may also hinder the development of the legal system.
