What is the Cyprus Legal system like?

Cyprus is an island country governed by two independent legal systems. There are two separate legal systems: the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC). The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus operates based on the Turkish legal system. The TRNC Constitution, laws and courts operate in accordance with this legal system. The legislative body of the TRNC is represented by the Parliament, and the executive body is represented by the President. Laws taken from Turkey, such as the Turkish Civil Code and the Turkish Penal Code, are valid in TRNC. The Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus operates based on the Greek legal system. The Greek Cypriot Constitution, laws and courts operate in accordance with this legal system. The legislative body of the Greek Cypriot Administration is represented by the Parliament, and the executive body is represented by the President. Laws taken from Greece, such as the Greek Civil Code and the Greek Penal Code, are valid in the Greek Cypriot Administration. Both legal systems operate independently and have their own laws and courts. Turkish and Greek communities living in Cyprus are subject to their own legal systems and are tried in courts according to these laws. However, if the Cyprus problem is resolved and the island is united, a common legal system will need to be established.
