Since Libya is a Muslim country, Islamic law is taken as a basis when it comes to marriage. Marriage usually takes place with family approval and is often celebrated with a wedding ceremony. A person under 20 years of age cannot marry unless he/she receives court permission. Weddings are usually large and crowded. Families and friends of the bride and groom come together and celebrate the wedding with various rituals, dances and traditional music. Weddings usually last several days and traditional clothing is worn. Marriages in Libya are usually arranged between families and often take place regularly. A religious marriage is officially recognized, but some couples can also have a civil marriage.
