The greatest events in Ugandan History

1. October 9, 1962: Uganda gained independence. It separated from British colonial rule and became an independent state.

2. January 25, 1971: Idi Amin came to power through a coup. Amin ruled the country as a dictator between 1971 and 1979 and committed many human rights violations and massacres.

3. 16 May 1980: Milton Obote comes to power for the second time. Obote governed Uganda between 1980 and 1985. During this period, political turmoil and civil war occurred in the country.

4. 21 May 1986: Yoweri Museveni comes to power in Uganda. Museveni is the current president of Uganda and has been in power since 1986.

5. 1998-2003: Uganda took an active part in the Second Congo War, which took place in neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo in the Great Lakes Region. In this war, Uganda supported rebel groups and was directly involved in the war.

6. July 11, 2010: Kampala bombings. Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia caused the death of 74 people and injured hundreds of people as a result of bomb attacks in Kampala, the capital of Uganda.

7. 2014-2015: LGBTI rights debates in Uganda. The Ugandan government has enacted discriminatory laws against LGBTI individuals and has attracted the reaction of the international community.

8. 2016-2018: Kasese conflicts. Many people lost their lives as a result of the clashes between the Ugandan government and the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu kingdom.

9. 2020-2021: COVID-19 pandemic. Uganda, like many other countries, has been affected by the COVID-19 epidemic and the government has taken various measures.

10. 2021: Election of the new president. Yoweri Museveni was re-elected as president in the elections held in January 2021. Opposition leader Bobi Wine challenged Museveni in the elections and post-election protests took place.
