Western Sahara is a region under the control of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a partially recognized state. SADR declared the independence of Western Sahara in 1976, but this declaration was not generally recognized internationally. The SADR's military force consists of units known as the Sahraui People's Liberation Army (SPLA). The SPLA's military structure is similar to that of a regular army. The commander of the army is the general secretary of the Polisario Front, the leader of the SADR. The SPLA does not have traditional military units such as artillery, tanks, air force and navy. Instead, they operate with guerrilla tactics and lightly armed infantry units. SPLA's main goal is to achieve the independence of Western Sahara. SPLA's military training and equipment are provided by SADR and other supporting countries. Sahraui warriors are mostly trained for desert conditions. They particularly focus on desert warfare tactics and fighting skills. The Sahraui People's Liberation Army is tasked to protect and defend the borders of Western Sahara. The SPLA occasionally launches guerrilla attacks against Morocco and participates in various operations to maintain control of Western Sahara. However, the SPLA's military power is limited as the SADR has limited resources as an unrecognized state. Therefore, there is no permanent conflict situation in Western Sahara. SADR is trying to achieve independence mostly through diplomacy and international pressure.
