What is the legal system in Western Sahara?

Western Sahara's legal system is based on a legal system not recognized by the United Nations (UN) but implemented by the Western Sahara Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which is seeking independence. SADR declared its independence in 1976 and established its own government. SADR's legal system is based on the constitution created by the Sahraui People's Meeting (Polisario Front). The SADR government consists of legislative, executive and judicial branches. The National Council, the legislative body, adopts laws in accordance with the SADR constitution. The executive branch, the President and the government, enforces the laws and manages the SADR's domestic and foreign policies. The judicial branch interprets and applies laws independently. However, the majority of Western Sahara lies in territory controlled by Morocco. Morocco considers and controls Western Sahara as its own territory and applies the Moroccan legal system in this region. Therefore, two different legal systems exist simultaneously in Western Sahara. The UN and the international community have made various initiatives to determine the status of Western Sahara and acted as mediators to find a solution between the parties. However, this process is still ongoing and there is no definitive solution regarding the legal system of Western Sahara.
