Sri Lanka Political parties

There are several important political parties in Sri Lanka. Here are some:

1. Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP): Founded in 1951, this party adopts centre-right policies. It has long been the largest political party in the country. The party led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa came to power in the 2020 general elections.

2. United National Party (UNP): Founded in 1946, this party adopts center-left policies. UNP, which was in power between 1977-1994 and 2001-2004, could not come to power afterwards. The leader of the party is Ranil Wickremesinghe.

3. Tamil National Alliance (TNA): TNA, formed by the merger of Tamil political parties, operates to defend Tamil rights. The party is influential in the regions with dense Tamil population in the north and east of Sri Lanka.

4. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP): Founded in 1965, this party adopts Marxist-Leninist ideology. JVP generally defends the rights of the working class and peasants. It gained fame with its guerrilla movements, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. These are just some examples of political parties and there are many more parties in Sri Lanka. The political scene may constantly change and new parties may emerge.
