What is the Nigerian Legal system like?

Nigeria has a legal system based on the British legal system. The country's legal system is based on the English Common Law system, dating back to the period of British colonial rule. Nigeria's legal system consists of laws in force at the federal and state levels. Nigeria is a federal republic with laws at the federal and state levels. Federal laws are laws made by the federal government and cover the entire country. State laws are laws enacted by the 36 states of Nigeria and cover only the relevant state. The judicial system in Nigeria consists of three tiers: local courts, state courts and federal courts. Local courts hear smaller cases and essentially apply customary law. State courts hear cases at the state level and apply state laws. Federal courts hear cases at the federal level and enforce federal laws. Law education in Nigeria is provided through undergraduate and graduate programs offered at universities. Law schools provide students with education about the basic principles of law, laws and the judicial process. Nigeria's legal system has been subject to some criticism. In particular, issues such as the inadequacy of the judicial system, the slowness of the judicial process and the difficulties in the fight against corruption are criticized. However, the Nigerian government is making efforts to reform the legal system and strengthen the independence of the judiciary.
