The greatest events in Kenyan History

1. December 12, 1963 - Kenya gained independence from the United Kingdom and was named the Republic of Kenya.

2. August 22, 1978 - The Kenya National Union (KANU) party led by Moi came to power and ruled the country for 24 years.

3. February 1, 1990 - Moi made a constitutional amendment that ended the single-party regime and enabled the transition to multi-party democracy.

4. December 27, 2002 - Mwai Kibaki succeeds Moi and becomes the third President of Kenya.

5. December 27, 2007 - General elections that resulted in Kibaki's re-election led to violent protests and clashes. Approximately 1,500 people died and 600,000 were displaced.
