Spain is a country located in southwestern Europe and a member of the European Union. Spain is a NATO member country and its military force consists of both land, air and naval forces. The military force of Spain is called the Armed Forces of the Kingdom of Spain (Fuerzas Armadas de España). The Spanish Navy manages Spain's naval operations. Its main headquarters are in Madrid and it has approximately 20,000 active personnel. The Spanish Navy consists of frigates, submarines, corvettes and amphibious vehicles. Additionally, there are other security forces in Spain, such as the National Police Force (Cuerpo Nacional de Policía) and the Spanish Gendarmerie (Guardia Civil). These forces are responsible for tasks such as internal security and intervention in civilian incidents. Spain also participates in international peacekeeping missions and provides military personnel to operations organized by the United Nations and NATO.
