Guyana Political parties

Political parties in Guyana are generally established to ensure the representation of ethnic groups. The most influential political parties in the country are:

1. People's Progressive Party (PPP): Influential in Guyana since the 1950s, PPP is the country's largest Indian-origin political party. PPP achieved significant political success under the leadership of Cheddi Jagan and later his wife Janet Jagan.

2. Progressive Alliance (APNU): The Progressive Alliance is a political alliance representing Afro-Guyanese people. Founded in 2011, APNU was formed by the coming together of Afro-Guyanese leaders. APNU was successful in the 2015 general election and elected David Granger as the president of Guyana.

3. United People's Party (PPP/C): An offshoot of the PPP, the PPP/C is a political party that has been in power in Guyana since 1992. PPP/C achieved victory in the general elections held in 2011 and 2015 and elected Donald Ramotar as president.

4. Alliance for Change (AFC): Founded in 2005, AFC is a political party that aims to unite Indian and Afro-Guyanese people on a common platform. AFC came to power in the general elections held in 2015 by making an alliance with APNU.
