Bangladesh military forces are called Bangladesh Armed Forces. These forces are divided into three main waves: Bangladesh Air Force, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Army. The Bangladesh Armed Forces were established in 1971 after the country gained independence. Since its establishment, the Bangladesh Armed Forces has been actively working to fulfill both internal security and national defense missions. Bangladesh Army is the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. It performs many different missions, including border security, homeland security, emergency assistance, and national defense. The Bangladesh Army has approximately 200,000 personnel. Bangladesh Air Force is the air force of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. Its missions include air defense, air strikes, reconnaissance and naval blockade. The personnel number of the Bangladesh Air Force is approximately 22,000. Bangladesh Navy is the maritime force of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. Its duties include naval blockade, coastal security, protection against air attacks from the sea, and maritime search and rescue. The number of personnel of the Bangladesh Navy is approximately 24,000. Bangladesh Armed Forces conducts various training and cooperation programs both locally and internationally. It is also involved in peacekeeping operations and other UN peace support missions. The leader of the Bangladesh Armed Forces is the Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, who is under the command of the President of Bangladesh. The Chief of Army Staff chairs the Supreme Command Council of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, a board comprising the commanders of each armed force.
