Hong Kong SAR became a special administrative region on 1 July 1997, upon its transfer from a British colony to China. Hong Kong is part of the People's Republic of China but has a status of autonomy and broad semi-autonomy. The defense of Hong Kong SAR is provided by the Hong Kong Garrison of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). The Hong Kong Garrison is currently part of the PLA, while focusing on Hong Kong's defense and security affairs. The military force of the Hong Kong SAR includes the Hong Kong Garrison, as well as other security forces such as the Hong Kong Police Force, Coast Guard Force and Fire and Emergency Services. These forces perform a variety of missions, including local security, control of civilian incidents, and emergency responses. The Hong Kong Garrison consists of PLA soldiers and assumes command of troops based in Hong Kong.
