Honduras is a country located in Central America, and its healthcare system has a mixed public-private model. Health care in Honduras is regulated by the Essential Health Care Act. Honduras' healthcare system consists of three levels: primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare. Primary health services are provided in health centers and health posts. These health centers include primary health care, family planning and urgent care. Secondary health services are provided in regional hospitals and polyclinics. Tertiary health services are provided in large hospitals and private medical centers. The social security system in Honduras is administered by the Instituto Hondureño de Seguridad Social (IHSS).
