Mauritania is a country located in West Africa. The country's economy is largely based on agriculture. Agriculture accounts for approximately 20% of GDP and provides 50% of employment. Major agricultural products include wheat, barley, corn, millet, rice, cotton, sugar cane, vegetables and fruits. Mauritania's biggest economic resource is mines. The country's rich underground resources include iron ore, copper, gold, phosphate and oil. Iron ore, in particular, accounts for a large portion of the country's exports. The mining sector accounts for approximately 25% of GDP and provides 70% of exports. Mauritania is also a country rich in fishing. The Atlantic Ocean and the Senegal River along the coastline are home to many fish species. The fishing sector has an important place in the country's economy and accounts for part of its export revenues. The country's industrial sector is less developed than the agricultural and mining sectors. Major industries include food processing, textiles, leather, oil refining and construction. Tourism is also a sector that contributes to Mauritania's economy, but the country's security problems limit its tourism potential. Although Mauritania is an economically developing country, its poverty rate is quite high. The country's economic growth is being tried to be further accelerated by focusing on the solution of social and infrastructure problems.
