Suriname is a country located on the coast of South America. The education system is influenced by the education system of the Netherlands and basically consists of five stages: kindergarten, primary school, secondary school, high school and university. Kindergarten education covers children ages 4-6 and offers children a variety of activities to support social and emotional development as well as basic skills. Primary school education covers children ages 6-12 and includes basic learning skills and courses such as mathematics, science, social studies, language and arts. Secondary school education covers students aged 12-16 and offers core courses as well as electives based on students' interests. High school education covers students between the ages of 16-19 and is generally preparatory to university. In addition to general education courses, students can take courses of special interest. University education is offered through institutions such as the University of Suriname. The University of Suriname offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in many different disciplines.
