What is the North Korean legal system like?

In North Korea, the legal system is run by an authoritarian regime that is completely under the control of the Communist Party. Although the North Korean Constitution is the country's supreme legal document, actual legislative, executive and judicial powers are controlled by a single person, the country's leader. The legal system in North Korea is based on socialist ideology and is primarily founded on revolutionary and communist principles. The judicial system functions as a tool used to implement party policies and protect the regime's interests. The Supreme People's Assembly, the legislative body, prepares and adopts the laws of the country. However, these laws are often based on the leader's instructions and party policies. The judicial body consists of the Supreme People's Court and the people's courts. However, judges are also people appointed by the leader and there is no way to talk about an independent judicial system. Human rights violations are widespread in North Korea, and laws are used to protect the regime's interests. Fundamental human rights such as civil liberties and freedom of expression are not respected. Repression and persecution of political opponents, religious minorities, and other dissenters are commonplace.
