Wars in which Mozambique participated

After gaining independence, Mozambique participated in various civil wars and wars outside its borders. Here are the important wars in which Mozambique participated:

1. Mozambique Civil War (1977-1992): After gaining independence, Mozambique went to war with the guerrilla organization called Renamo within the country. This civil war lasted between 1977 and 1992 and affected large parts of the country. Hundreds of thousands of people died in this war and the country suffered great destruction.

2. Mozambique-Tanzania War (1979): Mozambique entered into a brief conflict with Tanzania over an attack against its neighbor Tanzania. In this conflict, clashes lasted for several days and Tanzania eventually repelled the attack.

3. Mozambique-Zimbabwe War (1984-1987): Mozambique had a conflict with Zimbabwe due to the Renamo guerrilla organization launching attacks from its bases in Zimbabwe. In this war, the Mozambican government took military measures to defend its borders against Zimbabwe. The war ended in 1987 when Zimbabwe abandoned its support for Renamo.

4. Mozambique-Zaire War (1996-1997): Mozambique sent military units to Zaire to intervene in the civil war in Zaire. In this war, Mozambique supported the rebel groups in Zaire and, on the other hand, aided the Zairean government. As a result of the war, the rebels in Zaire were successful and the country was renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo.

5. Mozambique-Zimbabwe Border War (2000): Mozambique entered into a conflict on the Zimbabwe border due to the political crisis in Zimbabwe. In this war, Mozambique took military measures to help refugees coming across the border due to the political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe. Mozambique also took part in various international peace operations by sending troops to the United Nations peacekeeping force. For example, Mozambican soldiers have participated in peacemaking efforts in countries such as Angola, Sierra Leone, and East Timor.
