Wars in which East Timor participated

East Timor was a province of Indonesia before gaining independence and participated in several Indonesian wars during this period. The most important of these is the Timor Timur War between 1975 and 1999, when East Timor was occupied by Indonesia. Timor Timur War began with the Indonesian government's military intervention against East Timor's demands for independence. During this war, the people of East Timor showed armed resistance against the Indonesian army. The East Timor Independence Movement (FRETILIN), the East Timor resistance organization, played an important role in organizing this resistance. Throughout the war, the people of East Timor were subjected to major human rights violations. The Indonesian military has committed war crimes such as mass murders, rape, torture, and forced displacement. These events attracted international attention and support for East Timor's demands for independence increased. As a result of a referendum held in 1999, the people of East Timor voted in favor of independence and Indonesia's occupation was ended. However, due to the violence that occurred after the referendum, the International Peace Force (INTERFET) had to intervene in the region. East Timor did not participate in wars after gaining independence. Today, East Timor remains a peaceful country.
