Belize Political parties

In Belize, political parties play an important role in the democratic structure of the country. There are various political parties in Belize, but the most influential and widespread are known as the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People's United Party (PUP). United Democratic Party (UDP) is a political party founded in 1973, representing centre-right politics in Belize. The party remained in power between 2008 and 2020. UDP adopts policies such as free market economy, low taxes and investment incentives. The People's United Party (PUP) is a political party founded in 1950, representing centre-left policies in Belize. PUP has been in power at various times since the country gained independence. The party advocates policies such as social justice, equality and securing access to public services. Besides these, there are other political parties in Belize. Some of these are parties such as Belize Progressive Party (BPP), Vision Inspired by the People (VIP) and Belize People's Front (BPF). These parties generally find support on a small scale. In Belize, political parties perform duties such as nominating their candidates in elections, determining their policies and introducing themselves to the public. The people of Belize have the right to determine the future of political parties by voting in general elections.
